Equipment Here is a link to the Troop 849 long term backpacking equipment checklist.  This excellent list serves as both as a checklist and purchasing guide for equipment.
Clothes The backpacker's mantra with regard to clothing is "cotton kills".  Synthetics and wool are the choice for backpackers because they dry quickly and/or maintain their insulating qualities even when wet.
How to pack the pack. Here are a few pages from the LAAC Leaders Backpack Training course; includes yet another packing list and some guidance for how to pack a backpack (what to put where).  And don't forget your Wilderness Essentials.
Another checklist Bill O'Brien put this packing list together for us when we did our weeklong backpack through Yosemite.
About bears and food This is a handout from the Inyo National Forest Wilderness Permit Office
Get Ready! Backpacking can be a lot of fun, but "be prepared".

(1) Bring the right stuff (see above)

(2) Do some conditioning beforehand; expect to carry a fully loaded pack, about 25% of your body weight.  It is wise to take some walks or hikes (or get in some treadmill time) with a loaded pack.  You can also use this time to fine tune the pack's adjustments so that it fits you properly.

(3) Arrive on time or even early; a big part of feeling good if the trip is at high elevations is getting acclimated to the altitude.  Some recommend ginkgo biloba, taken for several weeks prior to the trip, as being helpful for adjusting to altitude changes.
